Taylor Swift Opening Act Vance Joy Moves Beyond 'Riptide'

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Australian singer owes much to Vance Joy "Riptide".

Not only has the song become a global success (Met top-30 in the US) and earned the 27-year-old, a five albums with Atlantic Records. But the earth helped the joy of a slot opening in the hottest summer tour.

Joy, real name James Keogh, will open for Taylor Swift during her sold-out show at The Q Wednesday night. It is one of the 50 shows Joy Swift will play this year.

"One of the shows we've played in Baton Rouge was in front, like, 50,000 people," says Joy, calling from the road. "It was the greatest show I've played in terms of the number of people and size of the stadium."

Joy connection with Swift began last fall. Their management teams were already in talks to be open for touring Swift joy. Swift then covered "Riptide" in a segment of "Live Lounge" of the BBC in October, consolidating duo date with destiny.

"I knew I tour with Taylor was a possibility, but nothing is solidified," recalls the joy. "His cover of Riptide was incredible. It was a total surprise and I think he did the song reach a wider audience."

"Riptide" has actually been around for a while. Joy originally recorded the song May 2012.

The indie-folk dance his way to the top of the music charts in Australia in 2013, where a record was established more weeks at No. 1 (107 consecutive weeks). In January 2015, the song had gone double platinum in the US

Following up on "Riptide" Joy released the indie-pop gem "Georgia" last February. The track did not enjoy instant success "Riptide" did. However, the recent movement "Georgia" in the top-20 lists of Australia has been, in some ways, more rewarding.

"When you have a successful song as Riptide, I hope that people buy you enough that they are curious to hear what else you have," says Joy. "I knew 'Georgia' was a special song, but I really had to work to get it over the line in Australia. I was very willing to work hard with that song because I really believed in it."

Tour enforcement joy with Swift concludes in December with a series of concerts in native Australia Joy, putting a sign on an exclamation appropriate epic year for the singer upstart.

"By the time I come to Australia, I've played something like 50 shows with Taylor Swift," says Joy. "You learn a lot every time you walk out in front of a lot of people. I also will have some free time after that being at home. So there are plenty of reasons to be excited to go home in Australia."

Vance Joy On Dueting With Taylor Swift And Crushing On Nicole Kidman

For Vance joy, that sharing a stage yesterday at KROQ Weenie Roast with artists as diverse as Muse, AWOLNATION and Florence + the Machine was convenient. Joy finds inspiration from an eclectic group of people, their next Tour mate Taylor Swift and high school friend Chet Faker boxer Manny Pacquiao.

After a whole in the sold-out show and a few hours before he took an overnight flight to Alabama Hangout Festival, Joy sat down with Billboard to talk about his eclectic tastes and his dream duets with Swift.

Talk about bands you're sharing the stage with today.

I got to see Florence in Coachella and it was amazing. I think she's amazing and I have to see it in the flesh of a couple of meters, which is good. I think she just around the corner there was given; it is like a glimpse of something special. I'm glad I got to hear the "singing cry of the Moon" AWOLNATION, so I take what you can get.

How do you feel being essentially the lonely troubadour in the bill?

You just do what you do and what I do is something singer / songwriter, and is potentially a little softer; but it is optimistic, it's still pretty raw. So I think it's good when you queue to have that variety of people. I think people also have different tastes. It's kinda nice to have this contrast, because if you had 11 singers, it would be so boring. So I think it has AWOLNATION rocking and kill him and then Florence, which is an incredibly huge facility, great production, but all the real instruments, is really cool.

What do you learn from being around all these artists?
Talking to them is great and sometimes talking to them about playing music is good because they've been through and they can say things. It is a relieving thing I've been through it and can go "Oh, okay, I totally know what it feels uncomfortable at times." You go, "Cool, we are all experiencing the same thing." I think seeing them is important. And I think the most important thing is just hours and hours of practice. Hours and get those subtle differences in performance, making it better. So I think it's a mixture.

Are there people you looking for on how to handle sudden fame and the demands of it?
I do not get overwhelmed that much, like, super bad. I took like 10 pictures today, so it's not so bad. I like it because someone like Manny Pacquiao, who will take photos with everyone, do selfies before entering combat. If you push people away, it's almost more of a strain, but if you're like, "Whatever," is the most free and tolerant way. He is a very open guy, so I think people like that are good role models have. He is getting flooded all the time, but he just brings people in and makes it bigger. I think that's why he is so highly regarded.

Look who's on tour with. Few people deal with it as much or as well as Taylor Swift.
She is quite inspiring. I read something once said to surround himself with great artists and not be afraid of fire they have, it's like you have a brighter light together. And I think she burns brighter because of the way it interacts with its fans. It is a great thing for someone like her to be so generous with his time, I'm sure she is in demand every second of your day. So to take that piece of time people are very generous.

Who scared you to have that time as a child?
When I was a young child I remember I saw Nicole Kidman in Batman Forever and that was where I wanted a slice of time. I did not know what was going to do because I was only eight years; I had no idea. But I think it is the most sporting people when you're a little kid and even now I still have that little bit of nervousness when I saw Florence: this person is pretty epic.

I talked to Chet Faker a few times and he talked about how nice it is to see someone from home on the road and to compare notes.
Yes, I think I have the chance to see it in a week in Boston. It's inspiring to see what he's done and it’s like, went to high school together, so it's a little strange that the two have been on this trip. We had a very good connection, just because we love the music and he is a great person, a great personality and fun guy. We share a passion for music and I saw him make a proper go. I think it helped me, I think what made me: "... I want to do this too I try to do it seriously" It's a very cool turn of events that happened to us.

You just covered Taylor. What would you do duet with her?
What is the Johnny Cash [written by Bob Dylan]? "It is not Me, Babe." That would be a good duo and their songs I like "Begin Again" and "Mean". My song is a song called "My kind of guy" who had incredible sound. I could choose, actually.

Already it has been writing for the next album?
I'm writing, I'm trying to undermine. I am inspired by people like Ryan Tedder, who writes for the whole world and his own band and has an amazing output quality. I am writing to someone for me, I'm always trying to chip away, it is good to feel the pressure of writing. If you just go on tour and forget about writing, you come back and you have not done anything for a year, the muscle is rusty. So I'm going to keep writing.

Vance Joy Performs Breakthrough Hit “Riptide” On ‘Conan’

Vance Joy is one of the successes unlikelier 2014, While the rest of the game seems to be doing more, Australian singer / songwriter became less. All he needed was a ukulele and a demonstration that had been sitting at your computer for several years to land a worldwide success. "Riptide" reached number one in Santiago (his real name) quadruple platinum homeland and eventually sold. It was not long before the song was a hit throughout Europe.

That leaves the US chart domination and Vance is working on it. "Riptide" is located just outside the top 30 on the Billboard Hot 100, while his debut LP Dream Your Life Away reached the top 20. His campaign should receive a substantial boost when it hits the road as the opening act for Taylor Swift 1989 world tour. To get an idea of what the Australian sounds like live, check out his typically brilliant performance on Conan up top.

Album Review: Dream Your Life Away // Vance Joy

James Keogh, better known as Vance Joy, rose to fame in early 2013 after the release of their first EP God loves you when you're dancing. The EP contains the first two singles Keogh who have created a lifetime of opportunities and success for him. His most notable song 'Riptide' appeared in advertisements, listings of vacation around the world and even in The Inbetweeners 2 - movie that was filmed in the country Keogh, Australia. After its great success, what can we expect from their debut album?

Dream your life away sends you back into your own land of dreams where everything is perfect, including the soundtrack. The debut album called Vance Joy maintains its high level of passionate writing and voice.

If you've heard of the first two singles boy Ozzy, you know for sure that you are definitely in for a treat when you lose yourself in this album. Each track is blessed with unique letters emphasize the singers anxiety, dissatisfaction, and motivation to keep going. Along with the songs that pull on our heartstrings, voice Vance Joy push us to our own world of perfection, passion and purity. It is an album that every one of us can relate.

Without trying to sound too positive, the track reached only number 20 in the UK charts. Vance Joy is not clear to everyone. Their unique sound, voices and harmonies feed can only be endured for a long time before you decide you've had enough to remember the past and you find yourself snapping back into reality. The album is full of emotional songs ... I do not want for yourself too low.

Some songs on the album are more forgettable than others, but that cannot always compare slower songs of the album from the likes of 'Riptide'. Each track has beautiful elements of their own rights, some just seem to stand out more than others. This is due to strong Keogh more meaningful lyrics and vocal tones; 'We All Die Trying to Get It Right' is especially touching. Stresses that the listener songs Keogh would stress, while others are somewhat more muted tracks filler. Their efforts are not for everyone, but the story it tells is definitely worth listening ... if only once.

Despite this, you cannot blame the sound of the album and if indie-folk is your kind of thing, you'll love. For a debut album, you cannot get much better than this. I just hope his albums in the future reach a higher standard, and he continues to produce hit singles that have a connection with listeners and infuse their passion for singing about issues.

'Riptide' Singer Vance Joy Just Got His Best Gig Ever

Vance Joy has not been able to tell anyone until today, but that just landed the most coveted gigs all - the slot opening 1989 World Tour Taylor Swift.

"I've kept pretty tight-lipped," says the Australian singer-songwriter, known for his crossover smash Riptide, saying he shared the news with his parents yesterday. "It's one of those things you want to tell people immediately."

The 26-year-old native of Melbourne, Australia, whose birth name is James Keogh, I was pretty sure I had landed the gig when Swift covered Riptide for BBC Radio 1 in England. "I was confirmed that he loved the song and knew me and was in the things he was doing," he says.

The two met for the first time last week before the appearance of Swift on The Late Show with David Letterman. "I came backstage while she was doing the soundcheck and I met her and her team and her band," he says. "She was warm and friendly and obviously excited about the tour. It's great to meet someone with such a strong vision and it's all over all parts of the agreement."

Joy released their debut album, Dream Your Life Away, September 9 in the US and is currently leading a club tour. He played for 15,000 or more people at Lollapalooza in August, but, otherwise, he says, "the greatest show I've played is like 2,000 people, so playing stadiums will be an incredible challenge, but also exciting. Acting front so many people I will do a better performer.

"It's definitely the biggest thing we've been part scale."

"Stoked that @taylorswift13 invited the band and I on her North American tour next year. Going to play some big venues"
